Polaris Industries Inc. Recalls ATVs Due to Risk of Injury to Riders

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Select "Outlaw IRS" ATVs, Model Years 2006 2007 2008

Units: About 11,300

Manufacturer: Polaris Industries Inc., of Medina, Minn.

Hazard: A retention bolt can come loose causing the rear wheels to lock up, which poses a risk of serious injury to the rider.

Incidents/Injuries: The firm has received 11 reports of loss of control, including one rider who suffered a strained leg muscle.

Description: The recall involves select 2006-2008 Polaris “Outlaw” ATVs with Independent Rear Suspension (IRS). The affected models are:

Hazard: One or more of the motorcycle’s frame welds could be missing or made incorrectly allowing the frame to crack or break, posing a risk of serious injury to riders.

Incidents/Injuries: None reported.

Description: This recall involves 2008 Kawasaki KLX140A8F/B8F off-highway motorcycles. They are designed for the beginner as well as the more advanced rider. They are green in color and have “Kawasaki” identification on the sides of the fuel tank and KLX140 underneath the seat on both sides.

Sold by: Kawasaki motorcycle dealers nationwide between January 2008 and February 2008 for about $2,700.

Hazard: The brake caliper on the left front wheel could have been made incorrectly, resulting in brake fluid leaking. This can cause a loss of braking and control of the vehicle, posing a serious safety risk to the driver and passenger.

THIS MIXTURE IS KEPT INSIDE THE UNIT BY CONTROL OIL/GAS SEALS. IF THE SEALS BECOME DAMAGED, THE MIXTURE WILL ESCAPE.
Consequence:
 ONCE THE MIXTURE HAS ESCAPED THE RSU, THE REAR SUSPENSION WILL LOSE IT DAMPING ABILITY. THE REAR SUSPENSION WILL BE CONTROLLED ONLY BY THE ACTION OF THE COIL SPRING ALSO ATTACHED TO THE RSU.
Remedy:

THIS WOULD BE INDICATED BY ILLUMINATION OF THE ABS WARNING LAMP.
Consequence:
 IF THIS HAPPENED, THE BRAKES WOULD REMAIN FULLY AVAILABLE TO SLOW AND STOP THE MOTORCYCLE. DEPENDING ON TRAFFIC AND ROAD CONDITIONS AS WELL AS A RIDER'S REACTIONS, COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Polaris Atv Sportsman, Scrambler Recall

Polaris 2004 and 2005 and 2006 model year All Terrain Vehicles are being recalled because of a fire hazard.

This latest recall affects about 95,000 ATVs in addition to 45,000 recalled in June 2005. Polaris Sportsman and Polaris Scrambler units are involved in the recall.

The ATVs' Electronic Control Modules might be defective and overheat, and create a fire hazard to riders. Polaris reports receiving hundreds of complaints of smoking or melting on ATVs and almost two dozens reports of fires, including 9 that involved catching other property on fire.

The model and serial numbers are printed on a decal attached to the front side of the radiator or the top of the front cab cover and serial numbers are stamped into the left frame rail behind the front wheel.

Big Dog Recalls Mastiff, Chopper, K-9, Bulldog, Mutt

Big Dog is recalling 8,061 Model Year 2005 and 2006 and 2007 and 2008 Mastiff, Model Year 2005 and 2006 and 2007 Chopper, Model Year 2006 and 2007 and 2008 K-9, Model Year 2005 and 2007 Bulldog, and Model Year 2008 Mutt motorcycles.

The rear fender strut attaching bolts can fail allowing the rear fender to detach from the motorcycle. This could occur without prior warning and could result in an injury or a crash.

Dealers will remove existing strut bolts and replace with higher tensile strength attaching bolts and updated washers. Higher torque values will be observed when installing the replacement fasteners.

Honda Recalls CBR1000RR

Honda is recalling 25,422 Model Year 2006 and 2007 CBR1000RR motorcycles.

These motorcycles have an improper welded vent pipe in the bottom of the fuel tank. Due to vibration, the improperly welded tanks may crack and drip fuel. Fuel leakage in the presence of an ignition source can result in a fire.

Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel tank.

Triumph Recalls Sprint and Tiger

Triumph is recalling 3,698 Model Year 2005 and 2006 and 2007 and 2008 Sprint ST 1050 and Model Year 2004 and 2005 and 2006 and 2008 Tiger 1050 motorcycles equipped with an optional accessory luggage rack.

Undersized washers were used which prevents the sliding carriage from moving as intended. Reduced stability can occur if the motorcycle is ridden with the fitted accessory, exceeded maximum weight, and at speeds far in excess of the 80 mph limit warning, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will inspect the accessory racks for lateral movement. Those racks not displaying any movement will be repaired.

BRP Recalls Spyder

BRP is recalling 476 Model Year 2008 Can-Am Spyder Roadster passenger vehicles.

There is a presence of an abnormal quantity of air in the hydraulic circuit of the front brake. The brake pedal may go almost to the floor when depressed. A driver may be unable to stop the vehicle as expected increasing the risk of a crash. BRP has notified each owner informing them of this problem and scheduling a pick-up time to retrieve the vehicle.

Dealers will inspect and perform a bleeding of the brake system if needed. The recall began on November 21, 2007. 07V-561.

Suzuki Recalls Grand Vitara

Suzuki is recalling 40,424 Model Year 2006 and 2007 Grand Vitara vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions for failing to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 114, "Theft Protection."

The automatic transmission selector lever "park" lock function may be inoperative due to a sticking shift lock arm. The shift lever may be able to be shifted out of "park" with the key removed and without depressing the brake pedal.

This can give rise to increased incidents of crashes resulting from the roll away of parked vehicles as a result of inadvertently moving the shift lever from the "park" position when the parking brake is not fully engaged. Dealers will replace the shift lock module.

Kawasaki Recalls ZG1400, Again

Kawasaki is recalling 3,611 Model Year 2008 ZG1400A8F, ZG1400A8FL, ZG1400B8F, and ZG1400B8FL motorcycles. Again.

The rear carrier platform could break if a Kawasaki genuine accessory luggage system is installed on the carrier platform and a passenger leans against it. The carrier platform and luggage system could become detached from the vehicle, creating the potential for a crash which could result in injury or death.

Dealers will inspect and replace the rear carrier platform if necessary.

Kawasaki Recalls ZG1400

Kawasaki is recalling 4,645 Model Year 2008 ZG1400A8F, ZG1400A8FL, ZG1400B8F, and ZG1400B8FL motorcycles.

The pivot pin for the latches that secure the saddlebags to the vehicle can break if force is applied to either saddlebag, such as in the event the vehicle falls over while parked or if the saddlebag is improperly attached. Continued use of the vehicle with either saddlebag latch broken can result in the saddlebag coming free of its mount during vehicle operation, creating the possibility of a crash resulting in injury or death.

Dealers will replace the saddlebag latch assemblies with reinforced latches.

VCAN Recalls Outlaw Helmets

VCAN International is recalling 29,134 VCAN and Outlaw motorcycle helmets, Model V530, sizes XS, S, M, L, XL, and XXL, for failing to comply with the penetration, strap retention, and labeling requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218, "Motorcycle Helmets."

In the event of a crash, the wearer of one of these helmets may not be adequately protected possibly resulting in serious injury. VCAN will notify owners and replace the helmet. The manufacturer has not yet provided the agency with a notification schedule.

This recall was the subject of an investigation, OA-218-070919, conducted by the Office of Vehicle Safety Compliance. 08E-005.
